What In The Heck Is This Ugly Bird
Suburban wildlife is so much fun. Take, for example, this fledgling Mockingbird. This young Mockingbird landed on the back porch and posed perfectly on top of the chair, allowing a photographic opportunity. A fledgling Mockingbird is a young bird that has left its nest but still needs the support of its parents. They can fly, although they may not be strong flyers yet. When they leave the nest, they spend about a week on the ground, hopping around, learning to fly, and being fed by their parents, who are usually nearby watching their activities.
As you can see from these photographs, these fledgling mockingbirds have all of their feathers, a short tail, short wings, and a furry crown. This fledgling Mockingbird was able to fly, and after a few photos, it took to the air, disappearing from view.
Fledglings still depend on their parents for food and protection while they learn to fly. They will leave their nest on their own, but sometimes those who are hesitant to leave home need a little encouragement from their parents. Parents are always watching and waiting for a chance to feed their young. If you see a fledgling Mockingbird, leave it alone; it will be fine, and its parents are nearby.
Suburban wildlife is extraordinary.
